| Etty
Ben-Zaken, vocalist, author and interdisciplinary artist,
performs in Israel, Europe and the US, contemporary works as
well as early and ethnic music. The author of two published
novels, Ben-Zaken is now a Ph.D. candidate in the Folklore Unit
of Haifa University, and a lecturer in the Theater Department
of Haifa University. In her lectures she combines academic knowledge
and performer's experience, and successfully approaches various
audiences in museums, universities and private events. |

The Ladino folk songs - a demonstrated lecture
Etty Ben-Zaken speaks about the Judeo-Spanish folk songs, their historic
background, the way they were preserved, their various genres, and
the unique language in which they are sung. In between, she performs
folk songs from the Sephardic communities in Jerusalem, the Balkans
and Morocco, accompanied by guitarist Oded Shoub.
The
Voice - a demonstrated lecture
Etty Ben-Zaken speaks about the voice as a music instrument, and
the ways in which it is used in different cultures. Using CDs, DVDs
and lots of live examples, Ben-Zaken demonstrates the various vocal
techniques used in ethnic, popular, classical and contemporary music.

Etty Ben-Zaken speaks about the voice as a music instrument in various
ethnic cultures as well as in the Western classical tradition. Among
the series' topics: The healing power of the voice; Mourning in traditional
cultures and vocal classical works dealing with loss; Vocal music
in the 20th century, and more. Throughout the series, alongside CD
and DVD examples, Ben-Zaken performs folk songs, classical pieces
and contemporary works, and completes the series in a unique vocal
recital. The series was presented for the first time in the 2008/09
season at the Tikotin Museum, Haifa.

"An
Old Nigun in a New World" - about ethnic music
Etty Ben-Zaken speaks about ethnic music in Israel and abroad: the
way it was preserved, its role in folk rituals and its revival as
'world music.' Among the series' topics: ethnic music of the various
ethnic communities in Israel; Ethnic music in films; Ethnic music
in the concert hall, and more. The lectures are accompanied by CDs,
DVDs, and by Etty's live demonstrations. The series ends with the
concert "The Love Medicine," in which Ben-Zaken performs
folk songs and folk tales, accompanied by guitarist Oded Shoub.
The series was presented for the first time in the 2007/08 season
at the Tikotin Museum, Haifa.

Etty Ben-Zaken speaks about folktales, their role in culture,
and the way they still play it, though in new media. The series
is accompanied by films' excerpts and many folktales, and discuss,
among other topics, the fairytale's influence on cinema; myths
about the creation of the world, the first man and the first woman;
legends about saints and demons, fools' stories and more. The
series is presented for the first time in the 2009/10 season at
the Tikotin Museum, Haifa.
